This project explores how emotions spread across social media platforms during emotionally charged conversations. The aim was to analyze the dynamics of emotional contagion and understand how online interactions propagate specific emotional states.
Data Collection
Data was gathered from Twitter using relevant keywords to capture conversations during high-emotion events. Tweets were extracted, cleaned, and organized for analysis, maintaining relationships between original and response tweets to study emotional contagion.
Data Preprocessing
The collected tweets were cleaned using Python to remove irrelevant elements, and non-English tweets were translated to ensure consistency. Tweets were structured in a Pandas DataFrame, preserving parent-child tweet relationships for analyzing emotion flow.
Emotion Classification
The optimized version of RoBERTa was adapted using our dataset to classify seven core emotions. Through fine-tuning, we enhanced the model's ability to accurately capture emotional states in social media conversations. The resulting predictions were structured into an Emotion Contagion Table, enabling a clear visualization of how emotions transitioned and spread across different tweets.
The analysis provided valuable insights into how emotions propagate across social media in response to high-emotion events. By examining the transitions between different emotional states, we identified clear patterns in how emotions spread through online interactions. Two distinct datasets were analyzed: one focusing on emotional contagion during the Tanishq advertisement controversy and the other capturing the dynamic emotional shifts surrounding the FIFA World Cup Finals. These results highlight the intricate emotional dynamics in social media conversations and their evolution over time.
Tanishq Advertisement Controversy
The analysis of the Tanishq advertisement dataset revealed clear patterns of emotional transitions. Anger was a predominant emotion, often shifting into fear or neutral states. Notably, fear acted as a central emotion, with other emotions like sadness and anger frequently transitioning into it. Joy, though less common, also transitioned into fear under certain circumstances, highlighting the volatility of emotional responses in this controversy. These findings suggest that fear often amplifies in emotionally charged discussions, while anger tends to subside into neutral or fearful states.
FIFA World Cup Finals: Hourly Emotional Shifts
The hourly emotional analysis of the FIFA World Cup Finals provided dynamic insights into how emotions evolved in real-time. Before the match, anticipation drove emotions like fear and neutral sentiments. As the game progressed, joy and fear dominated the conversation, reflecting the high stakes and thrilling nature of the match. After the final whistle, emotions shifted again, with anger, fear, and neutral responses becoming more prevalent. This hourly breakdown captured the intensity of emotional contagion during live events, showcasing how quickly emotions can spread and change during high-stakes moments.
